Personal Learning Reflection

Effective Teaching Strategies When Integrating Technology
I participated in a learning style survey. This survey was helpful to me to see how I prefer to learn. I would like my students to participate in a learning style survey. It will be helpful to me to evaluate my students learning styles. I would like to see if there is a learning style that the majority of the class has or it the styles vary greatly within the class. I need to examine my lessons and make sure throughout the school year I’m incorporating each learning style in a lesson at some point during the school year.  Students become better learners and are more able to adapt if they are exposed to lessons that address various learning styles.

As a teacher I have to be knowledgeable about the content I teach, be aware of how I teach and also I need to have knowledge of technology and how to teach technology within my content area. I have to take my traditional teaching lessons in my content area and be able to teach those lessons in a new way using technology as a tool or resource to teach the lesson.

How Integrating the Internet – Helped Me Think About & Evaluate Uses of Technology
The use of the Internet opened so many doors to new ideas and video tutorials on how to use the new technology tools and resources. It is astounding to see how quickly information is available on how to use new apps or new e-devices. I will no longer feel like I’m being left out of the loop. It is my responsibility to be in the loop introducing my students to the newest technology. My job is to ignite a spirit of exploration and experimentation with my students and the teachers I work with.

Now, I can be the person that starts conversations saying, “Have you tried this?” I can show the teachers how the app or tool works. I can provide them with a video link showing a demonstration of how to use the technology they want to use. I can give them a link to a teacher that has already used this technology with their own students. The teachers can learn and see examples of how the technology is used in the classroom with students.

I’m finding there is no need to be afraid of using a new technology. I can teach myself by using the Internet. I have created personal learning networks that can answer my questions if I get stuck trying a new technology. After I try the new item with my students I can make adjustments to improve the lesson the next time. Students can figure out how to use technology even if the teacher doesn’t know how to use every aspect of the technology.

Which of the Assignments that I Turned In  - Do I Feel Exemplifies Good Teaching with Technology and Why?
I feel the SIG assignment was the assignment that incorporated all the areas of good teaching with technology. I was put in the position of being the learner. I worked with a team of people. We selected the tools we would use for our plan, for saving our web site list and for our presentation. The SIG group communicated with each other on the theme of the presentation, we collected research and saved the sites to our Delicious account and we prepared a presentation with Google Presentations. We decided who was responsible for what and who was researching what topic. We decided who would create the tools we would use for presenting our information at the planning, collecting and presenting stages. We communicated using e-mail, leaving notes within our documents and using the communicate tab in our class and posting messages to each other in the communicate section.

I learned how to use Google documents, Delicious and Google Presentations. I watched Atomic Learning videos. I learned how to use features like sharing the documents with specific people or sharing with anybody. I had to learn the special features of each program and work myself through the programs so I could add my content information.

I researched for sites to add to my RSS, I read my RSS Reader, I read articles on my topics and watched videos on my topic. I found web sites and tutorials that supported the topic I was researching. The topic of the SIG presentation that I participated in was using the iPad in K-12 classrooms. In Delicious I saved the sites and listed how the sites would be helpful in our presentation.

I felt a tremendous responsibility to locate information and to present the information in the best way I could. I knew I wasn’t working by myself and that other people were relying on me to do a good job. I didn’t want to disappoint the group. This pressure not to disappoint other people made me invest more time and effort into the project. I also made an effort to get things done in a timely manner. The group worked to piece together our plan when part of it was lost. The group worked on organizing the information for the presentation so it flowed smoothly.

I feel this assignment gave each person the experience we need to pull off teaching a group project to our students using shared documents. We gained the experience of sharing documents, of communicating, and making group decisions. The assignment gave us the opportunity to learn how to use new tools and to learn how to use tutorials when we don’t know how to do something on our own. This project gave us guidance from our teachers. We turned in our PLN and received feedback and then we were able to go back and revise our PLN. We received feedback on our Delicious and we were able to go back and make corrections. We received guidance on our final project that helped guide us to a solid final project. The deadlines and feedback helped give us direction and broke the project into more manageable steps.

Students need to have open-ended projects that allow them creativity in creating the meaning of the project and to be able to collaborate with the students in their group. The students’ act as problem solvers and the teacher acts as a guide. This allows students to experience the frustrations of running into problems and being able to maneuver around the problem and find a solution to the problem on their own.

How I Have Met My Goals Established in My Personal Growth Plan
In this class one of my goals was to learn more about copyright. I learned about Fair Use and how educators can apply fair use to the materials they use in the classroom. I learned a lot about copyright and the use of photographs. I learned about Creative Commons licensing. How to use copyright free photos from Flickr and how to give the photographer credit for the picture and how to attach the Creative Commons agreement to the picture. I like the Fairy Use Tale from You Tube that talks about copyright law. I think my fifth grade students would enjoy the presentation of copyright and fair use. The cartoon contains video clips from Disney cartoons. I plan on investigating copyright free images elementary students can safely use for locating photos. I now can work with my students using digital images and feel like I can instruct them on how to import the image and properly credit or attribute the source.

One of the goals I had for this class was to gain experience working collaboratively online. This was a great experience. I learned how to plan things as a group, how to use e-mail to communicate, how to share and edit resources, how each person has their own special skills and how each person contributes to the final product that is greater, than the final product just one person can do alone.

A goal of mine was to increase my technology skills. This class forced me to learn how to use many programs that I haven’t used at school. Some the programs included: Google Docs, Google Presentation, Gmail, Google Reader, and Twitter. I ended up buying myself an iPad. All the researching about apps and schools using iPads in the classroom made me want to use one myself. I’ve added a variety of apps to my iPad as I read about in the apps in my research.

I have increased my knowledge of e-readers and e-devices. I found out the iPad can use the Kindle app, the Nook app, and the iBook app. Many schools have received grants to fund the purchases of their e-devices. I’m becoming familiar with using my own iPad and apps. Now I’m noting how I will use various apps to teach technology to my students. To help me select apps I have found many good reviews. I like the chart that shows the Higher Thinking Tools for iPads and more.

I can’t believe how much my knowledge has increased in eight weeks. Now I’m also interested in looking into using the iPod touch as a learning tool for the students. I have my own iPod Touch that I can experiment with.

I have gained experience using online tools that I can access from home and school. I always have to check when I get to school to see if I can access the site I want to use for my lesson. I email the document from home and open it when I get to school as a back up. I’m hoping in the future my students will be able to use Google Documents. Until that time I will implement the use of Moodle for my fifth grade students to have an experience collaborating together online.

I have met the goals in my personal growth plan way beyond what I expected I would learn. I can’t believe how much material we covered in such a short time. I spent so much time reading, watching videos and researching it was amazing. It was so much fun to learn how to use the technology. At times it was overwhelming I always worked beyond my overwhelmed feelings and progressed forward. This was a great learning experience. I feel so much more involved with the technology world.

I would have liked to learn more of the apps that I read about during my research. I would have liked to learn more of the programs we have to choose from for our presentations. There is just so much information to cover it is difficult to learn every program. There is only so much a person can learn during one class. I will have to pursue some of the programs after the class ends.

The New Goals I Have
I have many new goals and ideas after participating in this class. I want to prepare myself to present a plan for purchasing a classroom set of iPads. I would like to use the iPads with my technology classes K-5.

I plan on devising a plan showing the apps I would use to teach each grade level technology lessons that meet the METS/NETS standards. Included in this plan I would recommend a basic training that could be provided for teachers to introduce them to the use of the iPads. The plan will need to include a charging cart, Apple TV, a data projector and printer that will work with the iPad and the Apple TV.

I will present this plan to the educational foundation at my school. I would like to ask them to provide funding to purchase a classroom set of iPads, a charging cart, Apple TV, a data projector and printer. If I’m turned down by the educational foundation I will approach the PTO’s for each building. I may have to look into grants if I can’t receive funding from the educational foundation or the PTO.

After the presentations for this class now I’m interested in finding out more about using the Apple iPod Touch. I never knew that an Apple iPod touch could have apps downloaded to it. I’m going to take some time and look at Tony Vincent’s Learning in Hand. I have an iPod Touch and have only used it for music. Having a classroom set of iPod Touch may be a good beginning for using apps and a little less expensive than a set of iPads.

I am also interested in looking at school policies that allow personal e-devices in school.
I think our district could use more technology in the classroom. If students were allowed to use their personal e-devices in the classroom teachers could involve more use of technology with their students.

My Long Term Goals after This Course is Over
My long-term goals after this class include taking classes at MSU. I want to earn a Master’s Degree in Educational Technology. My next step is to apply to the Master’s program.

I plan on developing a K-5 grade technology curriculum based on the METS/Nets, developing lessons plans for each grade level and developing rubrics for each lesson or unit. I plan on creating an elementary technology program that will involve students actively creating, collaborating and researching information. I want students to have hands on experience using technology of all types.

I plan on playing an important role in teaching our teachers how to use technology within curriculum. I plan on educating teachers, students and parents on how to effectively use technology as a learning tool to prepare our students for their future.

I need to receive more technology to use with my students. I would like to purchase: digital still/video cameras, headphones, microphones, MP3 players, GPS, iPods, iPads, apps, data projectors that work with the iPads, Apple TV and printers that will work with the equipment. I would like to join TWICE so my students can participate in distance learning with another classroom. I’m in support of our district policy changing so students can bring in their own e-devices for learning.
